We are really impressed with how Year One have settled into their new classes. So far we have been looking at ‘Helpful Heroes’, where our main focus has been on Vets and animals. We have explored the human body and have been learning about Florence Nightingale (a helpful hero from the past).
Campfires and Fireworks:
Our first topic this year is ‘Campfires and Fireworks’. In this topic we will be exploring the history of Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night. We will also be developing our map skills and will be creating a fire evacuation plan for our classroom. We are hoping that our local Fire Station will be able to come and visit us.
We will be writing non-chronological reports about Fire Fighters. We will also be writing fire and firework poems and using imperative verbs to write instructions.
Some of the texts that we will be sharing are ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘Firefighters’ by Anne-Sophie Baumann.
We will be beginning our mathematics work by looking at number bonds. We will then be moving onto looking at addition and subtraction. This will be followed by some shape work and exploring place within 20.
