Year 1

Spring One

Terrific Toys and Fantastic Fairytales…

This term we have a brand new topic and lots of exciting learning planned.

We will be using what you told us in your homework to plan where our learning about toys and fairytales will take us.

In History we will be learning about toys from the past and looking at the similarities and differences with toys we play with now.

In Art, we will be focusing on sketching skills. We will be learning how to sketch from first hand observation and we will be sketching our own teddy bears.

Our Science learning will be centered around two main parts – plants and seasons. We will be learning about what a plant needs to grow and about the main parts of a plant. We will also be doing our own planting at school!

Vocabulary Glossary:

Maths:

Our Maths learning begins with Place Value. We will be working with numbers to 20 and looking at how they can be represented. How many tens are there in 15? How many ones are there in 17? We will continue to use part-whole models, tens frames, dienes and bead strings to support this learning.

Later on in the term we will be moving onto addition and subtraction, working with numbers to 20.

English:

Our English this term begins with a focus on grammar, punctuation and spelling. We will be learning about the structure of sentences and embedding the use of capital letters and full stops. We will then be looking at David Lucas’ story ‘Lost at the Toy Museum’.

Spellings:
Please see your child’s spellings below. Your child will also be given a paper copy to take home.
We have a spelling test every Friday.
