Year 1

A new chapter…

We have lots of exciting learning planned for the next few weeks. Our topic for the next half-term is ‘Helpful Heroes’. You can find out more about what we will be learning below.

Have we learnt about something at school that has really sparked your interest? If you would like to create something at home that relates to our topic, we would love to display your home learning in our Year One classrooms.

Helpful Heroes:
Our new topic is all about the people who help us in our community. We will be learning about different helpful heroes such as doctors, vets and police officers.
In Science, we will be exploring animals and how they can be grouped. We will be using your soft toy friends, from home, to help us to do this!
In History, we are going to be learning about a helpful hero from the past – Florence Nightingale.
We will be exploring our locality and looking at maps in Geography.
We also have lots more learning planned in Art, Music, PSHE and ICT.

English:
In English this half term, we will be looking at the features of a narrative, going on to write a simple story. We will be using the text ‘Maisy goes to Hospital’ to help us to do this.
We are also going to be spending time looking at sentence structure and how we use capital letters and full stops.

Maths:
Our Maths focus for the next half term is Place Value. Some of the things we will be learning will include sorting and counting objects, representing numbers in different ways and finding one more and one less.

 Spellings:
Please see your child’s spellings below. Your child will also be given a paper copy to take home.
We have a spelling test every Friday.

You can also practise your spellings and handwriting on your tablet or computer by clicking here .
