Sports Premium

At Eastfield we are dedicated to enhancing sporting achievement and building a lasting legacy for each pupil and the wider community. We are committed to delivering excellent PE and sports coaching for children across the school. Our PE lessons, after school and inter school sport standard is very high due to the high expectation of sport at Eastfield.

At Eastfield, the children learn and improve a range of skills through a sporting context. These sports include:

  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Basketball
  • Tennis
  • Hockey
  • Football
  • Cricket
  • Athletics
  • Orienteering
  • Swimming (currently for years 3 and Y6)

Sports Premium funding has been provided to ensure impact against the following objective:
To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. (DfE,)
It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:

  • 1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick- starting healthy active lifestyles.
  • 2. The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
  • 3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  • 4. A broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
  • 5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

In recent years Sports premium money has been and will continue to be spent in the following ways:

  • purchases of new equipment for football, netball and gymnastics
  • Gymnastics coaching across the school
  • An enhanced rotation of games, dance and gymnastics blocks using specialist coaches with the benefit of in-session extra training for teachers
  • KS2 Basketball coach from Leicester Warriors
  • KS1 and KS2 Tennis coach
  • KS1 and KS2 gymnastics coaches
  • KS2 Hockey coach
  • Specialist dance teachers
  • Intensive in-pool support for swimmers
  • One-off experience day for dance
  • Participation in the Jump2It Dance Festival
  • Transport to and from Inter school competitions.
  • ‘This girl can’ parent/ daughter workshops.
  • Swim England Swimming assessment and rewards.
  • Engagement with clubs in the local community.
  • Improving girls’ attitudes to sports in upper KS2.

To ensure improvements are sustainable teachers participate in evaluations and lesson studies in order to be able to deliver high quality sports provision.

Teachers work alongside the coaches. They take notes, photos and videos so they can improve their own sports teaching. In addition, teachers pair up for lesson studies to reinforce their training. This way we deliver high quality PE for the children but also train our own teachers for the future.
The impact of the programme will be monitored by the PE specialist.

Impact

Our approach to sport at Eastfield in the last year has continued to have a large impact on the attainment, enjoyment and wellbeing of pupils and staff.
Our usage of local sports coaches affiliated with the likes of Leicester Riders Basketball Club, Hinckley Gymnastics Club and Jumpstart (primary dance specialists) among others, has equipped our pupils with the core skills required for them to achieve their potential in a range of sports.

During the Spring term, they participated in a whole-phase Handball tournament with excellent sportsmanship being shown by all. Children of all abilities showed perseverance, teamwork and communication skills. In addition to this, we now run a wider selection of extra- curricular sports clubs including Running, Rugby, Football, Gymnastics, Netball, Basketball, Kung- Fu, Multisports and Yoga, all of which have higher attendance rates than the last two years. We are really proud of our children and our own commitment to upholding all forms of sport as something for everyone to enjoy.

Finally, at Eastfield we see sport as a major factor in the wellbeing of our pupils and staff. The mental and physical health of our school community is of great importance to us and during the last year, we have made strides in how we approach this during PE lessons and sports clubs. Our Yoga and Running clubs aim to teach our children aspects of mindfulness and general fitness, while our competitive sports have helped to improve their self-esteem and social confidence. We hope to develop this further as we develop our range of sports further throughout the current academic year.

Impact also includes:

  • Greater knowledge of core skills and coaching techniques.
  • Improved staff confidence over a range of sports.
  • Session planning, evaluation, observation notes and video clips to support future sessions.
  • Enjoyment for staff and pupils
