The Teaching and Learning of Computing
Our computing curriculum is built on a knowledge-rich approach that equips pupils with a secure understanding of digital literacy, computer science, information technology and online safety. Through the Teach Computing Curriculum, developed by the National Centre for Computing Education, pupils follow a carefully planned sequence of lessons that progressively build skills from Key Stage 1 onwards. This structure is underpinned by the latest research and classroom-based practice, ensuring high-quality, evidence-informed teaching.
We encourage staff to integrate computing across the wider curriculum wherever appropriate, making learning creative, engaging and relevant. Pupils are given regular opportunities to apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts—whether through problem solving, programming or digital content creation—helping them develop confidence and creativity as young computer scientists.
The Outcomes of Our Computing Curriculum
By the time they leave Eastfield, pupils will have developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to flourish in an ever changing technological landscape. They will:
• Be confident, safe and responsible digital citizens, understanding how to protect themselves and others online, make informed choices, and behave respectfully in digital spaces.
• Apply computational thinking skills, such as logic, pattern recognition and decomposition, to solve problems independently and systematically.
• Use a range of digital tools and software effectively, selecting appropriate methods to create, edit and share information for different purposes.
• Demonstrate foundational programming skills, including writing, debugging and refining code across different platforms.
• Show creativity and resilience, using technology to explore ideas, communicate effectively and collaborate with others.
• Be prepared for future study and employment, with a secure understanding of the digital world and the confidence to adapt to emerging technologies.
Ultimately, our aim is for every pupil to leave Eastfield equipped not only with technical competence, but with the curiosity, confidence and digital awareness they need to thrive as learners and citizens in a connected world.
