PSHE

The purpose of teaching PSHE

At Eastfield, Personal, Social and Health Economic Education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Our PSHE curriculum, is a responsive approach, which aims to help our children to understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are a part of growing up. We provide our children with a comprehensive understanding of the diverse world around them and support them to develop their sense of self- worth by playing an active role in contributing to the school and wider community. Furthermore, the elements of the National Curriculum: drugs and alcohol, relationships and sex education, financial education and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle as well as current and relevant issues such as body image and social media are carefully woven into our PSHE curriculum. Each classroom has an established safe atmosphere where children can explore sensitive issues and share their feelings. Through the use of our carefully chosen texts that underpin the wider curriculum, our pupils will develop the skills to empathise with others and develop their own identity, values and beliefs.

The teaching and learning of PSHE

Kapow

PSHE and RSE lessons are delivered through a tailored scheme called Kapow, which brings together PSHE and RSE education. Our lessons aim to provide children with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. The curriculum covers key areas which will support the children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and financial matters. Kapow Primary’s RSE/PSHE scheme of work covers the relationship and statutory guidance (as set out by the Department for Education), including the non-statutory sex education.

At Eastfield, we deliver our PSHE and RSE curriculum with a child centred approach ensuring content is taught in an age and developmentally appropriate way for our children. We cover wider PSHE learning in line with the National Curriculum requirements and are responsive to our children’s needs. We believe this is the best approach to support our children’s personal development ensuring they become well rounded, confident individuals and active members of society. In addition, we promote the five British Values which reflect life in modern Britain: democracy; rule of law; individual liberty, mutal respect and tolerance.

Zones Of Regulation

As well as Kapow, we use the Zones of Regulation to support pupils social and emotional wellbeing. The programme uses  4 colours (green. blue, yellow red) to identify different emotions. In addition, children learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one to another. Pupils explore calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports so they will have a toolbox of methods to use to move between zones.

Everyone’s Welcome

At Eastfield, we are proud to be a No Outsiders: Everyone is Welcome school. This whole-school ethos is built on the belief that everyone is different, everyone belongs, and that there are no outsiders in our community—because everyone is welcome.

This inclusive approach helps prepare our pupils for life in an ever-changing world. We want our children to grow up confident in their ability to live and work alongside anyone, anywhere, without fear or judgement.

Each half term, we deliver a dedicated lesson based on a book from the Everyone’s Welcome collection. These sessions explore key themes and values, encouraging children to reflect on and celebrate their own identities, as well as those of others.

The outcomes of our PSHE curriculum

By the time our children leave Eastfield, they are taught how to make the right choices in order to live happy and healthy lives. We also work hard to ensure our pupils develop strong skills in speaking and listening, cooperation, empathy, compassion, resilience and mutual respect. Children have learnt to be aware of their feelings and emotions and are taught skills and strategies to help regulate feelings in order to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Our PSHE work is showcased in ‘Our Personal Development Journey’ books which can be found in every year group.
