The purpose of French at Eastfield

At Eastfield, we believe that teaching children about different languages helps them appreciate and embrace the diversity in our world. Introducing a new language should spark curiosity, offer valuable knowledge, and enhance their awareness of being part of a multicultural society.

How we teach French at Eastfield

The main purpose of our French curriculum is to lay the foundations for future language learning. Through French lessons in KS2 we hope to begin to embed the essential skills of language production (speaking and writing) and language comprehension (reading and listening). We aim to enhance the children’s cultural capital, fostering an understanding of both the similarities and differences between cultures.

Children begin French lessons in Year 3 at Eastfield and continue through to Year 6. During French lessons children will learn French vocabulary, pronunciation and phrases and have the chance to enjoy stories written in accessible French using vocabulary that they have learnt and combining new French words with English to aid understanding. Throughout their time at Eastfield, children will also get to participate in a number of French experiences such as learning French playground games, a French breakfast and running a French market stall.
